The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has handed over 44 rehabilitated boreholes to communities in Amuru and Nwoya districts, urging residents to use the facilities responsibly to ensure equitable access and long-term sustainability.
The boreholes are part of Quick Impact Projects implemented to commemorate the 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary celebrations.
The handover ceremonies were conducted separately in the two districts and presided over by the Commander of the 501 Infantry Brigade, Col Nathan Bainomugisha, who represented the 4 Infantry Division Commander, Maj Gen Felix Busizoori.
Col Bainomugisha cautioned beneficiaries against misuse of the water facilities, emphasising collective responsibility. “These boreholes belong to the community. They must be protected and used responsibly so that every resident can benefit, now and in the future,” he said.
He encouraged residents to actively embrace government development programmes such as the Parish Development Model, the Four-Acre Model, women empowerment initiatives and youth livelihood projects, noting that these interventions are designed to improve household incomes and overall quality of life.
Amuru Resident District Commissioner, Mr Oceng Osborn Geoffrey, praised the UPDF for complementing its security mandate with development-oriented interventions.
“The UPDF has gone beyond guarding our borders to directly supporting the well-being of our people. Their involvement in agriculture, construction and water provision is a milestone that deserves national recognition,” he said.
Amuru District LC V Chairperson, Hon Lakony Michael, reflected on the district’s painful past during the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency, noting that peace has created space for recovery and development.
He cautioned against irresponsible narratives that could reopen old wounds. “We must be careful with the kind of messages we share, especially in the media, because some content can retraumatise our people,” Hon Lakony noted.
In Amuru District, the LC III Chairperson of Akwa Village in Lamogi Sub-county, Mr Ojara Atkinson, credited the UPDF with improving sanitation standards and commended the force for its discipline and cooperation with civilians. In Nwoya District, the LC I Chairperson of Obul Village in Lii Sub-county, Mr Odoch Walter, applauded the government for restoring peace in northern Uganda and strengthening national security.
The ceremonies were attended by UPDF officers, local leaders and community members.
