Chairpersons of municipalities and city divisions from across Uganda have announced plans to meet President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to congratulate him on his victory in the recently concluded 2026 general elections and reaffirm their commitment to implementing the National Resistance Movement (NRM) manifesto.

Speaking during a joint media briefing in Kampala, the leaders said the meeting would also serve as an opportunity to pledge their support for the 2026–2031 NRM economic agenda and to discuss ways of strengthening service delivery at the grassroots.

The chairpersons, drawn from districts including Lira, Mbarara, Nebbi, Mukono and Mityana, Fort Portal City , Koboko Municipality among others said they played a critical role in mobilising voters and ensuring strong electoral support for President Museveni.

According to them, many of the municipalities and divisions they lead delivered over 80 percent of the vote in favour of the President.

Leading the delegation, the Chairperson of Mukono Municipality,John Bosco Wamala, said the planned meeting is meant to appreciate the President for what he described as a hard-fought victory.

“This was not an easy contest. Securing over 71 percent required joint effort from leaders at all levels, especially at the grassroots. As municipal chairpersons, we mobilised our people, and the results speak for themselves,” Wamala said.

“We want to meet the President physically to congratulate him and to assure him that we are ready to implement the NRM manifesto fully in our areas.”

Wamala added that local leaders will focus on monitoring government programmes to ensure they translate into tangible benefits for ordinary Ugandans.

Echoing similar sentiments, Kanyikyirize Aaron, a leader from Mbarara City, said the NRM’s 2026–2031 manifesto aligns with the priorities of urban centres, particularly job creation, industrialisation and youth empowerment.

“Our role now is implementation and supervision. We are committed to ensuring that government programmes reach the people and that resources are used responsibly,” Kanyikyirize said.

“As we implement this manifesto, we are also preparing our structures early for the next phase beyond 2031.”

Meanwhile, Mugabi Eric from Kamuli Municipality said municipal leaders will work closely with central government to track progress and address gaps in service delivery.

“The manifesto gives clear direction on wealth creation, infrastructure and social services. As leaders, we shall monitor government programmes, engage communities and make sure no one is left behind,” Mugabi noted.

“At the same time, we are planning strategically for the future and the next electoral cycle in 2031.”

The chairpersons stressed that their engagement with the President will also focus on strengthening collaboration between local governments and the central administration, especially in implementing key economic and social reforms outlined in the NRM manifesto.

They expressed optimism that closer coordination will accelerate development in municipalities and cities while reinforcing political stability and inclusive growth across the country.
