All is set for the upcoming International Women’s Day celebrations as preparations for the all-women parade reach their final stages at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
Women drawn from Uganda’s security institutions, including the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, Uganda Police Force and Uganda Prisons Service, will take centre stage during the national celebrations scheduled for March 8.
Their participation in full uniform carries strong symbolism. Security institutions that were once largely dominated by men now increasingly reflect the leadership, professionalism and resilience of Ugandan women. The parade stands as a visible testament to the progress women have made in national service, governance and security.
This year’s celebrations will be held under the theme: “Scaling up investment to accelerate access to justice for women and girls across Uganda.”
Speaking during rehearsals at Kololo, the parade commander for the 2026 celebrations, Lt Col Evelyn Asiimwe, said the participation of women in uniform is a central feature of the event.
She noted that the parade symbolises the growing strength and leadership of women in the historically male-dominated sector.
“When women and girls move forward, the whole nation moves forward because we are mothers and sisters to everyone,” she said.
Lt Col Asiimwe expressed excitement about commanding the International Women’s Day parade for the third time, describing it as a reflection of Uganda’s long-term commitment to advancing women’s empowerment.
She called upon Ugandans to attend the celebrations and witness the professionalism and dedication of women serving in uniform.
As Uganda marks International Women’s Day, the event serves not only as an annual celebration but also as a reminder of the country’s ongoing journey toward equality, dignity and opportunity.
