Veteran Ugandan statesman and former First Deputy Prime Minister, Gen. Moses Ali, has died at the age of 87.
Gen. Moses Ali passed away on July 18, 2026, at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, where he had been admitted earlier in the week. His family said he breathed his last at 4:25 p.m.
According to the family, the veteran statesman breathed his last at 4:25 p.m., bringing to an end a public service career that spanned several decades and left a lasting mark on Uganda’s political and security landscape.
His death was confirmed by Captain Mike Mukula, who announced the passing in a statement and paid tribute to the former Deputy Prime Minister’s contribution to the country.
Mukula described Gen. Moses Ali as a “distinguished patriot, freedom fighter, and statesman” whose lifelong service was dedicated to promoting peace, national unity, stability and the reconstruction of Uganda.
“Uganda has lost one of her finest sons,” Mukula said, extending condolences to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Government and people of Uganda, the family of Gen. Moses Ali, and the people of Adjumani, the West Nile sub-region and the entire country.
Gen. Moses Ali was one of Uganda’s longest-serving public figures, holding several senior government positions throughout his career. He served as First Deputy Prime Minister before later becoming Second Deputy Prime Minister, while also representing the people of Adjumani West Constituency in Parliament for many years.
Over the course of his public life, he played a significant role in Uganda’s political and security affairs, participating in various national efforts aimed at fostering stability, reconciliation and post-conflict reconstruction.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential leaders from the West Nile sub-region, Gen. Ali remained an active figure in national politics well into his later years, earning respect across the political divide for his experience and dedication to public service.
Throughout his career, he worked closely with successive governments and was instrumental in advancing development initiatives in West Nile while advocating for national cohesion and inclusive development.
News of his passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, government officials, colleagues and members of the public, many remembering him as a steadfast leader whose contributions helped shape Uganda’s modern political history.
Details regarding funeral arrangements and official burial programmes are expected to be announced by the family and government.
