Speaker Jacob Oboth Directs Immediate Construction Of Mulwanda Road To Boost Cross-Border Trade With Kenya

Speaker of Uganda, Jacob Marksons Oboth had the honor of attending the thanksgiving ceremony for Hon. Julius Wandera Maganda in Samia Bugwe South, Busia District.

Oboth addressed the people of Lunyo, highlighting the long-standing request for the construction of the 12-kilometer Mulwanda road.

Oboth directed Ministry of Works and Transport to immediately commence work on this vital link, which will run through Lumino Sub-County and establish a third border connection between Uganda and Kenya. This will significantly decongest the busy Busia and Malaba crossings, offering traders a faster, more affordable route for cross-border business.

Communities raised concerns about road conditions, railway development, and other infrastructure needs – concerns that deserve our focused attention. The Mulwanda road is a crucial first step.

Kenyan government has already completed its section up to the border river at Mulwanda. As Our part for Ugandan government is to complete the 12-kilometer stretch on our side.

Oboth instructed Ministry of Works engineers to prioritize this project to allow for immediate vehicle movement.

This project will divert heavy commercial trucks away from Busia town, reducing congestion, accidents and boosting trade. Oboth was joined by Governor of Busia County in Kenya, Dr. Paul Otuoma, who celebrated the fulfillment of a dream held by elders on both sides for over a century – a fully operational Mulwanda crossing. He also referenced the UN-Habitat Memorandum of Understanding for the Larger Busia Metropolis and the planned extension of the Naivasha railway to Uganda. He emphasized that Uganda is our largest trading partner in the region, and I extend my gratitude for his continued support. Let’s work together to ensure Uganda’s part of this vital link is completed swiftly, bringing tangible benefits to our people.
