President Museveni Hosts Togo's Leader Essozimna Gnassingbé On AU–EAC–SADC DRC Mediation Visit

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni warmly welcomed His Excellency Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Republic of Togo, who is here on a working visit as part of the AU–EAC–SADC Panel of Facilitators on the DRC peace process.

This panel comprises, H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, H.E. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, H.E. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, and H.E. Catherine Samba-Panza. Our region remains committed to dialogue and lasting peace.

The delegation was chaired by H.E. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Republic of Togo. Members of the panel include distinguished former African leaders; –

  • H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo (Nigeria)
  • H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya)
  • H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde (Ethiopia)
  • H.E. Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi (Botswana)

H.E. Catherine Samba-Panza (Central African Republic), President Museveni underscored that the DRC conflict is well understood within the region, noting its long-standing humanitarian impact, including Uganda’s hosting of over 500,000 Congolese refugees who share deep ethnic and cultural ties with communities in western and south-western Uganda.

Museveni emphasised on the following;-

  • The crisis should not be allowed to persist given its clear historical & political roots.
  • The current challenge is no longer about territorial fragmentation, but unresolved grievances that require honest dialogue and practical solutions.
  • Prolonged delays in resolving the conflict remain a concern for the entire Great Lakes region.

On his part, President Gnassingbé thanked President Museveni for the warm reception and commended Uganda’s consistent leadership and contribution to regional peace initiatives.

H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo reiterated the importance of African solutions to African problems, stressing that while international partners may be supportive, lasting peace must be grounded in Africa’s realities and ownership of its peace and security agenda.

The engagement reflects strengthened continental and regional cooperation under the AU–EAC–SADC framework, aimed at addressing the root causes of instability in Eastern DRC through dialogue, inclusivity, and shared responsibility.

Uganda remains committed to peace, stability, and African-led solutions for the Great Lakes region.
