UEDCL Upgrades Kampala South Substation, Boosts Capacity From 20MW To 34MW

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has completed a major upgrade of the Kampala South Substation, increasing its capacity from 20 megawatts (MW) to 34MW aimed at strengthening power reliability along Entebbe Road and surrounding areas.

The upgrade involved the commissioning of a new 10/14MVA transformer and forms part of a broader national grid optimisation programme designed to improve electricity distribution and service reliability across the country.

UEDCL said the project aligns with its wider infrastructure development strategy, which includes refurbishing the distribution network through substation upgrades, installation of new transformers, replacement of ageing poles and construction of new power lines. These interventions are intended to reduce outages, support growing electricity demand and ensure a safe, reliable and sustainable power supply nationwide.

The Kampala South Substation was officially commissioned in the presence of community leaders and members of the business community. The addition of a 14MVA transformer to the existing 20MVA unit brings the total installed capacity to 34MVA, Nankabirwa said.

The upgrade is expected to significantly improve the quality and stability of electricity supply for customers in Makindye, Salaama, Ndejje, Lubowa, Kajjansi, Lweza and neighbouring areas.

Energy and Mineral Development Minister Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu commended UEDCL for completing the project, describing it as a critical intervention to enhance grid reliability along the Entebbe Road corridor. She said the upgrade not only meets current demand but also positions the network to support future growth.

According to Nankabirwa, the new transformer will improve power supply reliability for more than 108,000 households and 650 commercial consumers, reducing outages and strengthening operational resilience within the distribution network.

The Kampala South upgrade is part of a nationwide grid enhancement programme under UEDCL’s mandate. Similar improvements have already been completed at substations in Kakiri, Kabale, Masaka, Kumi and Mubende, as the company works toward delivering a stable and reliable power supply for Kampala and the rest of the country by 2026.
