Uganda Police Force’s (UPF) SP kananura Michael updated the general public of the festive season traffic 2025 outcomes.
During the festive period between 22nd & 28th December 2025, fewer road traffic crashes were recorded compared to the same period in 2024, despite the increased traffic volume associated with the season.
Most of the crashes involved vulnerable road users, particularly motorcyclists (both riders & passengers) & pedestrians. Crashes involving motor vehicles were largely attributed to careless overtaking, speeding & following too closely.
One of the most tragic incidents during this period was a crash that claimed the lives of seven family members which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 27th along Masaka–Mbarara Highway in Lwengo District.
During the same period, traffic enforcement operations were conducted, leading to the apprehension of 154 drivers for various offences, as follows:
- 38drivers for driving without valid licences
- 12drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol
- 42drivers for reckless driving, mainly unsafe overtaking and speeding
- 42drivers for carrying excess passengers
- 13cases of dangerous loading
- 7 abandoned vehicles
The joint efforts of Uganda Police Force & key stakeholders, including Ministry of Works & Transport, Uganda Professional Drivers’ Network (UPDN) & others particularly in public awareness & enforcement have yielded positive results.
Our key interventions included:
Enforcement of “#Arrive #Alive” operations, Conducting road safety awareness campaigns in partnership with stakeholders, including the media and Uganda Professional Drivers’ Network.
As we head into the New Year, all road users are urged to priorities safety by:
- Observing speed limits
- Avoiding speeding, drink-driving, reckless overtaking, & reckless riding
- Maintaining safe following distances
- Limiting night travel where possible & ensuring adequate rest to avoid fatigue related crashes
- Staying alert at all times
Please note that these interventions will continue throughout the New Year.
Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone.
