Ministry Of Health Commissions New Maternity Ward And Theatre At Nyabirongo HCIV To Boost Maternal Care In Kasese

Ministry of Health has commissioned a new maternity ward and theatre at Nyabirongo Health Centre IV in Bukonzo East, Kasese District, in a major boost to maternal and child healthcare in the region.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, officials from the Ministry said the decision to expand the facility followed an earlier support supervision visit, which revealed that Nyabirongo HCIV had only two small blocks struggling to serve a rapidly growing population.

The inadequate infrastructure prompted government intervention to improve service delivery and reduce pressure on mothers seeking care.

With the new maternity ward and fully equipped theatre now operational, Nyabirongo HCIV is set to function as a community hospital, significantly improving access to safe deliveries, emergency obstetric care and surgical services for surrounding communities. Health authorities, however, noted that some gaps remain, including the need for additional wards and more health workers to fully optimize services.

During the event, the Ministry also appealed to expectant mothers to prioritize antenatal care, maintain proper nutrition throughout pregnancy, and deliver from health facilities to reduce preventable maternal and neonatal deaths.

The expansion of Nyabirongo HCIV is part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, improve maternal health outcomes and bring quality services closer to communities, particularly in hard-to-reach areas like Bukonzo East.
