National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has swept all four positions of the National Women Council committee.
The four NRM flagbearers who include Ann Lumumba Ruyondo (Chairperson), Agnes Kirabo(Vice Chairperson), Hope Nantukunda (Secretary for Finance) and Among Shakila Mwenyi (Publicity Secretary) were declared unopposed by the independent Electoral Commission Returning Officer Benjamin Ewalu during the National Women Conference convened today Friday at Kyambogo College School.
Joy Ruth Acheng who had been nominated for the position of chairperson on the independent ticket withdrew her candidature before the electoral commission returning officer “for the good of the women of Uganda.”
“After wide consultations and deeply reflection I stand down from the race. I don’t want anything that divides the women and the NRM family,” Acheng said.
She urged all her supporters to work with Ruyondo to ensure the women of Uganda develop.
The incoming Women’s Council Chairperson Ann Ruyondo thanked the women leaders “for choosing me out of the many potential women leaders”.
“You have given me trust, and I won’t disappoint you. We promised alot in our campaigns and with your support we shall deliver,” Ruyondo said.
She commended the outgoing Chairperson Faridah Kiboowa and her executive committee for lifting the council high and pledge to deliver to everyone’s satisfaction.
The women committee elections mark the end of election calender by the National Electoral Commission.
