Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Selected as New Omukama of Tooro

The Tooro Kingdom has entered a new era of traditional leadership following the selection of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the kingdom’s next Omukama, succeeding the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

The announcement follows a sitting of the Babiito royal clan succession committee, the body mandated to identify and approve the next occupant of the Tooro throne. Prince Edward secured overwhelming support, receiving 19 of the 21 votes cast by members of the committee.

His selection is likely to usher in celebrations among the people of Tooro, both within the kingdom and among Tooro communities across Uganda and abroad, as preparations for the transition get underway.

Beyond his royal heritage, Prince Edward is familiar to many Ugandans through his career in broadcasting. He has worked as a journalist and news anchor with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), where he was among the presenters of UBC’s News Tonight.

The incoming monarch belongs to a distinguished royal family. He is the son of the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and the grandson of the late Omukama Sir George David Rukidi Kamurasi III, a prominent figure in the history of the Tooro monarchy.

His appointment therefore represents a continuation of the Babiito royal lineage and follows the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, whose passing opened the way for the kingdom to begin the process of identifying his successor.

The succession process was conducted by the Babiito committee, which met to deliberate on the next monarch. With Prince Edward receiving the backing of the vast majority of its members, the kingdom can now proceed towards organising the ceremonies and traditional processes required for his installation.

The leadership transition comes at an important time for Tooro, whose cultural and traditional institutions continue to play a significant role in preserving the kingdom’s identity while functioning within Uganda’s constitutional and legal framework.

Prince Edward’s move from journalism and broadcasting into traditional leadership adds another distinctive dimension to his story. His public profile and experience in the media could also shape the way the new reign engages with subjects, cultural stakeholders and the wider public.

The forthcoming enthronement is expected to bring together members of the royal family, cultural and traditional leaders, government representatives, religious leaders and large numbers of Tooro subjects.

With the succession decision now made, focus shifts to the official enthronement arrangements, including the programme and traditional rituals through which Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma will formally assume the position of Omukama of Tooro.
